Aliphatic amines in Chesapeake Bay sediments
نویسنده
چکیده
Aliphatic amines were determined in sediments and sediment pore waters from several contrasting sites in Chesapeake Bay. The aliphatic amines diethylamine, set-butylamine, n-propylamine, and i-propylamine were detected in a limited number of pore-water samples at concentrations generally less than 0.6 /IM. The occurrence of these amines showed no obvious correlation to other sediment geochemical parameters. Whole sediment (HF/HCl-extractable) aliphatic amines were less than 0.8 nmol/gdw. Isoamylamine and 2-methylbutylamine were the only amines that could be detected and quantified in sediment extracts, although diethylamine was below our detection limit in selected samples. When compared to other measured nitrogen pools in the sediments, these observations suggested that aliphatic amines may not represent a significant fraction of the nitrogen that is remineralized in these sediments, although more detailed concentration and rate studies are needed to verify their role in sediment nitrogen cycling. These aliphatic amines also did not appear to represent a major component of the uncharacterized nitrogen in these sediments.

Modelling phytoplankton deposition to Chesapeake Bay sediments during winter–spring: interannual variability in relation to river flow
The often-rapid deposition of phytoplankton to sediments at the end of the spring phytoplankton bloom is an important component of benthic–pelagic coupling in temperate and high latitude estuaries and other aquatic systems. However, quantifying the flux is difficult, particularly in spatially heterogeneous environments. Surficial sediment chlorophyll-a, which can be measured quickly at many loc...
متن کاملConowingo Reservoir Sedimentation and Chesapeake Bay: State of the Science.
The Conowingo Reservoir is situated on the Susquehanna River, immediately upstream of Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the United States. Sedimentation in the reservoir provides an unintended benefit to the bay by preventing sediments, organic matter, and nutrients from entering the bay. The sediment storage capacity of the reservoir is nearly exhausted, however, and the resulting increas...

Eutrophication and Carbon Sources in Chesapeake Bay Over the Last 2700 Yr: Human Impacts in Context
To compare natural variability and trends in a developed estuary with human-influenced patterns, stable isotope ratios ( C and N) were measured in sediments from five piston cores collected in Chesapeake Bay. Mixing of terrestrial and algal carbon sources primarily controls patterns of Corg profiles, so this proxy shows changes in estuary productivity and in delivery of terrestrial carbon to th...
